Most Ohio ballots didn’t see too many big issues in the November 2021 round of voting, but voters did decide on marijuana ordinance in several local areas.
Sensible marijuana ordinances decriminalizing marijuana possession came up in Martins Ferry, Brookside, Morristown, Powhatan, Dillonvale, Mt. Pleasant, Rayland, Tiltonsville and Yorkville. Most of these ordinances are in response to the fact that marijuana is still illegal Federally, and they are an effort to protect residents who possess marijuana without a valid Ohio medical marijuana card.
Unfortunately, most of the local ordinances related to marijuana possession did not pass. With most precincts reporting as of the afternoon of November 3rd, the only sensible marijuana ordinances that did pass are in Martins Ferry, Tiltonsville, and Yorkville.
In these Ohio communities, possession of marijuana will be reduced to the minimum misdemeanor charge allowed by the state. According to News9 legal analyst Mike Nogay, “The idea that it’s decriminalized doesn’t mean you won’t be arrested, it just means you won’t be punished as harshly.”
Medical Marijuana Patients Can Legally Purchase and Possess Marijuana in Ohio
On a positive note, medical marijuana patients in Ohio are legally protected regardless of local ordinances. When you have a marijuana card in the Buckeye State, you can purchase a variety of medical marijuana products—including marijuana flower, edibles, tinctures, topicals, extracts and more—at licensed Ohio cannabis dispensaries.
Medical marijuana patients in Ohio don’t have to worry about being arrested, harassed or fined for possessing the legal limits of cannabis set forth by the state, so long as there is compliance with the medical marijuana laws in the state.
This means no intoxicated driving, and purchases are only legal at licensed dispensaries. Marijuana patients in Ohio are also not allowed to share their products with others.
