Since the first dispensary opened in Wintersville in January, 2019, each month the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program's numbers have shown less than 50% of active medical marijuana cardholders in Ohio have purchased medicine at an Ohio dispensary.

The primary holdups in Ohio's program have been widely-recognized: lack of widespread geographic dispensary coverage and higher than expected pricing.

News that Ohio's program officially has had over 50% of the patient database purchase medical marijuana from an Ohio dispensary reveals the headway that Ohio is making in addressing the obstacles that patients have faced thus far.

The month of August brought with it the largest announcements of dispensary openings, while we expect August and September to maintain that pace of developments. As more dispensaries have opened their doors, and new cultivators and processors hit the market, we are noticing prices steadily drop to bring the pricing comparable to other state medical programs.

According to the OMMCP's most recent data, about 53,000 patients have been registered in the state of Ohio with just over 30,000 of those having purchased medicine; this equates to about 57% of patients that have purchased medical marijuana in this first 7+ months, totaling over $18 million in sales including over 2,100 pounds of plant material and nearly 48,000 units of manufactured products.

What Happens Next?

As we have covered, Ohio's medical marijuana program is now accelerating at a pace that we originally expected:

  • 26 of the 56 total dispensaries have received their Certificates of Operation

  • 9 of the 17 Tier-1 cultivators and 9 of the 13 Tier-2 cultivators have received their Certificates of Operation

  • 8 of the 40 total processors have received Certificates of Operation

  • 3 of the 5 total testing labs have received Certificates of Operation

While it may seem attractive to wait to obtain your Ohio medical marijuana card until further developments are announced, as more and more news comes out there are waves of individuals that want to obtain their card and schedule appointments. If you wish to avoid the rush, and have more control over scheduling flexibility, you can call our Patient Support Center at (866-457-5559) to lock in an appointment date for your medical marijuana evaluation.
