Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has approved the language of a proposal for a law legalizing recreational marijuana in Ohio. Right now, residents can legally access a variety of medical marijuana products at Ohio licensed dispensaries only if they are registered patients with a marijuana card.
Proposal to Legalize Adult-Use Cannabis in Ohio
The law, titled An Act to Control and Regulate Adult Use Cannabis and submitted by the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, would allow Ohio residents 21 and over to purchase, possess, and grow their own marijuana plants.
Medical marijuana businesses already operating in Ohio would automatically be awarded licensing for adult-use cannabis, streamlining the new addition to the market. All sales would include a ten percent tax in addition to regular sales tax; and the revenue would fund jobs, addiction treatment, and community support for areas where dispensaries are present.
Now That the Language Has Been Approved, What’s Next for Ohio Recreational Marijuana?
We still have a long way to go before any sort of legislation gets approved for recreational marijuana in Ohio. The Ohio Ballot Board is in the process of deciding whether the proposal contains one issue or many. Once that is determined, 132,887 Ohio registered voters need to sign a petition for the issue to be taken up by lawmakers in the state.
If lawmakers don’t pass a bill within four months of receiving the required number of signatures, then another 132,887 signatures would be required for the proposal to keep moving forward. Once that happens, then the measure can be put before voters on the next ballot. Which would likely mean that the November 2022 ballot will include the measure if enough signatures are collected.
