Two-Thirds of Ohio Medical Marijuana Patients Have Purchased Product

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

Update on Medical Marijuana in Ohio
Update of the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP)

The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program officially became operational earlier this year with the first licensed dispensary opening its doors to patients in January! Since then, there has been significant progress in all aspects of the industry:

According to the sales figures from the OMMCP as of November 17th:

  • 5,175 pounds of plant material has been sold

  • 189,326 units of manufactured product have been sold

  • $43.1 million in total product sales

  • 328,597 total receipts, or individual purchases

These sales numbers are based on the OMMCP's patient and caregiver figures:

  • 68,772 physician recommendations for medical marijuana treatment

  • 69,084 registered patients, including 4,739 patients with Veteran status, 3,238 patients with Indigent status, and 401 patients with a terminal diagnosis.

  • 45,987 unique patients have purchased from an Ohio dispensary, or about two-thirds of registered patients; this shows an increase of a little over 10% since mid-August

  • 6,940 caregivers have been registered to serve on behalf of a patient(s)

The main reason for the 33% of patients still yet to use their medical marijuana card for the first time has been the pricing of medical marijuana products, the availability of different forms of medical cannabis products, and the proximity of dispensary locations. While there is certainly still more progress that needs to - and will - take place, many dispensaries are starting to offer discounts and deals on top of some of the lowest pricing in the state, nearly all of the forms of medical cannabis that will be available have hit the market, and just about every area that has planned dispensary now has an operational dispensary location to purchase from.
